Sooner Schooner – Most mascots in the Big 12 come from sort of person or animal. There’s a bear, a longhorn, a cowboy, a cardinal, a mountaineer and so on. But OU is the only school in the conference that can, oddly, say their mascot is inanimate. The Sooner Schooner, a replica covered wagon, has been used since 1964 and has been OU’s offical mascot since 1980, according to the university. Driving the wagon are the Ruf/Neks, an all-male sprit squad with enough traditions for a whole other blog post, and pulling it are twin ponies, properly named Boomer and Sooner. The Schooner takes the field ahead of each home game and makes a trip around south end of the stadium to celebrate each score. While it is the most recognizable of OU’s mascots, it isn’t the first. Mex the Dog came to OU with a student who found him during the Mexican Revolution. He roamed the sidelines and was a fixture at the Kappa Sigma house on campus, but gained more attention when the Sooners were shut out after he was left on a train platform en route to a game. He was later recovered, and found his way to Stillwater for the next game against Oklahoma A&M.
